The company Biofase’s new “biodegradable straw” made of avocado seeds is a new idea that would address the significant environmental problems we’ve been having for a few years. It is a straw constructed of recycled avocado pits. This novel replacement for plastic straws is unexpected.

The avocado pit straw is similar to the paper straw but has a more fibrous appearance than the smooth paper straw. The Biofase company now provides two types of straws: one that is non-compostable at home and another that decomposes in 240 days (according to the producer).
Properties and certifications that are unsatisfactory
Simple self-certificates and a few official certifications are available. Thirty percent of straw is not biodegradable.
The avocado’s image is being disputed on a global scale
Although the avocado straw is constructed from a polymer derived from avocado pits, the production of avocados is controversial around the world. Avocado cultivation, in particular, demands a huge amount of water (1000 liters for 1 kg or practically 250 liters for 1 single avocado).

Avocado straw substitutes
Here are a few instances of natural one-time-use solutions:
- Wheat straw: This straw is one of the most eco-friendly and compostable alternatives on the market because it is made entirely of natural materials and cleaned with sterile water. It is very resistant, does not alter the taste, and may be used for both hot and cold drinks.
- Pasta straw: is an edible alternative: composed entirely of water and wheat, it is a one-time use solution that is completely natural. It has no taste and softens after about 30 minutes.

- Paper straw
Il n’y a vraiment aucun intérêt à acheter cette paille. Quand on voit les reportages (celui de Netflix par ex) sur la production des avocats, cela fait froid dans le dos. Les acheter ou les vendre, c’est être acteur de ces pratiques scandaleuses.

Je me sens dans l’obligation de répondre à votre commentaire.
Je suis représentant français de pailles et couverts en noyaux d’avocats en France. Il vous manque aujourd’hui quelques éléments sur ces produits.
La société Biofase qui fabrique les produits en noyaux d’avocat NE PRODUIT PAS D’AVOCATS. Elle récupère les noyaux auprès des usines de Guacamole et d’huile.
Nous avons aujourd’hui au Mexique un stock de noyaux pouvant alimenter nos usines pour plusieurs années. Les noyaux étaient anciennement brûlé et donc énergivore pour être détruit. Aujourd’hui nous les récupérons et leurs offrons une seconde vie. De plus en oeuvrant au remplacement des pailles et couverts en plastique.
Il est important de retenir que nous ne produisons pas pour fabriquer nos produits mais recyclons un déchet jusqu’à lors détruit.
Je me suis renseigné sur ces pailles en avocat : pas de certifications BPI, Dincerto ou compost.. que des auto déclarations venant d’un autre continent… ils n’ont pas de preuves qu’elles sont biodégradables et on choisi une norme ASTM très peu contraignante. De plus seulement, 70% de matières organiques, 30% n’est pas biodégradable… et enfin pas certifications de normes de l’usine.. Bref à fuir en plus des raisons évoquées.
